Zippelhaus History

The original Zippelhaus was built in 1604, nearby a prominent church dedicated to St. Catherine, and was granted, "in perpetuity", to the Vegetable merchants of the nearby town of Bardowick in Lower Saxony, in return for a nominal rent.

These vegetable merchants used the building as a distribution centre, warehouse and even, at times, as a residence. The name of the Zippelhaus is based on one of the principal products traded through it: onions, the Low German dialect word for which is Zippel (in high German Zwiebel). The original Zippelhaus had to be rebuilt in 1674, due to its declining condition. Due to road construction, this newer building too had to be replaced in 1888, and the vegetable merchants of Bardowick declined to extend their tenancy into the new Zippelhaus. The street running along the south face of the new building now bears the name Zippelhaus, in honour of this venerable institution. The new occupants were to be the Publishing house F.W. Rademacher, who commissioned plans for the new construction from the architect Carl Elvers. The still extant building displays a number of interesting stylistic flourishes, among which the two figures of Alois Senefelder (the inventor of lithography), and Johann Gutenberg framing the front entrance of the building stand out especially.
